SLOW DOWN FOR TOMMY!
On 28th April 2007 our adorable son Tommy was enjoying
a normal Saturday evening, doing a normal thing like being dropped off
to Nanny and Grandad’s but later that evening our beautiful boy
was tragically taken from us. That fateful night Tommy was hit by a
car at a traffic light crossing in Brook Road, Borehamwood. He sadly
died later that night in hospital of multiple traumatic injuries.
Tommy’s parents, Lynsey and Lloyd said “Our world and lives
as a family have stopped and every day is a struggle to live without
our son. Tommy also has a little brother, Alfie, grandparents, aunties,
uncles, cousins and friends whose hearts have been torn in two by losing
him in such an awful and horrific way. We would like to take this opportunity
to personally thank everyone within the community who have left floral
and football tributes and kind words. You have all comforted us immensely.”
Almost immediately we erected our own signs in memory of Tommy at the
accident spot in Brook Road to which we have had an enormous amount
of positive feedback. Many saying how poignant they are and how they
make drivers stop and think of the speed they are driving. We as a family
would not wish this pain and suffering of losing a child on anyone and
this is why we are setting up our own campaign, using the ‘Slow
Down For Tommy’ signs as our logo.
Our campaign will consist of petitions to reduce speed limits from 30mph
to 20mph in all school and park roads, neighbourhood questionnaires
and road safety talks to become mandatory in schools, nurseries etc.
Tommy’s aunt, Michelle Kirby states “statistics show that
the slower a car is going the more chance the person has of surviving.
Losing Tommy is a pain I cannot describe and I am going to take it on
personally to fight as hard as I can to make roads safer for all pedestrians
especially children, in particular Brook Road.”
We are delighted to have the support of the local MP, James Clappison
and are due to meet with him soon. We have also contacted the road safety
charity, BRAKE who will also give us help and advice with our campaign.
We would appreciate as much support and signatures on our petitions
as possible and hope that we can work together to make our roads safer
for our children.
